MR. SMALLEY.

Sir,—lt cannot but be a matter of regret that Mr. Smalley should have made a charge so indiscriminate. I agree with “ Anti Slander,” that such an unguarded statement is not calculated to do good. Moreover, Ido not endorse Mr. S.’s opinion, but am persuaded that this district will bear favorable comparison with any in the colony, or at home. Had I spoken after Mr. S. at the meeting in question, I could most truthfully have refuted his statement. My silence may be attributed to lack of opportunity rather than of inclination. I may say on Mr. Smalley’s behalf that after his visit to this place, he spoke to roe in the highest ter us of the Poverty Bay people, and I am at a loss to know why he has changed his opinion.—l am, Ac., T. G. Cabr. Gisborne, 30th November, 1875. [We are glad that Mr. Carr has made this vindication of Gisborne ; and that he thereby repudiates Mr. Smalley’s slanderous statement concerning this district. -Ed. P. B. S. and P. A.]
