Hibernian Benefit Society.—A meeting of those wishing to become members of this Society will take place in the school house today at 5 pan. Col. Whitmore.—This gentleman arrived in Melbourne, from England a few days ago, on his way te Napier, where he is shortly expected. Parade of Entires.—A parade of entires of horse stock will take place at Makaraka, to-day, from noon to three o’clock in the afternoon. The parade is under the auspices of the Agricultural and Pastoral Society, and the affair is expected to be a success. AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL SOCIETY.— We call attention to the of exhibits at the first annual meeting of the Poverty Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society, which takes place at Makaraka, in the fourth week of this month, the programme of which appears in another column. Divine Services will be held to-morrow as follow:—Church of England: The Rev. E. Williams, Theatre, Ormond at 11 a.to., Mr. Parsons’ residence Matawhero, 3 p.m., Holy Trinity, Gisborne, 7 p.m: There will also be morning service at Holy Trinity Church, at 11. Presbyterian : The Rev. W. H. Root, Ormond at 11 a.m.; Matawhero, 3 p.m. ; St. Andrew’s Gisborne, 6.30 p.m. There will be a • morning service in St. Andrew’s. Wesleyan : The Rev. Mr. Carr, Court house, Gisborne, morning 11 o’clock; evening, 6.30; Makauri 2.30, Survey of Lands on the East Coast.— The Government being most desirous that the land recently purchased from- the East Coast natives, by Captain Porter, should be passed through the Land Court at its next sitting in the Waiapu district, orders have been issued to complete the survey of these lands as speedily as possible; and the work is being consequently, proceeded with as rapidly as circumstances will permit. Messrs. Winter, Teasdale, and Eiffe, with their parties, are engaged in surveying large blocks, situated, respectively, in the Waiapu valley, and at -the back of Tokomaru; and Mr. O’Meara and party leave Gisborne to-day to survey a block of 60,000 acres, at the base of the Hikurangi mountains, and expect to have the work done by the middle of January next. Contiguous to this block, is another block of 70,000 acres, which Mr. O’Meara has also to survey, and which work he thinks, he will be able to complete by the end of March. There are, besides, two large blocks at Hicks’ Bay, the surveying of which- has, we understand, been promised to Mr. O’Meara.

In other putts of the distinct .much attention is being paid to the improvement of. culverts and side drains, to obviate, as far as practicable the overflowing of these water channels during pluvial visitations, from which latter the roads occasionally sustain material injuries. There does not seem to be any lack of energy on the part of the Rond Board to further the interest of the district, in improving its roads, as far a* their funds will permit. Divine Services at Ormond.—A meeting, convened by advertisement, was held at Ormond, on the 21st ultimo, for tliA' purpose of making arrangements for remunerating the respective ministers who perform divine service at Ormond. The object of the meeting having been discussed, a resolution was passed to.the effect that the settlers were willing to support the ministers representing the Church of England, the Presbyterian, and Wesleyan Churches, as far as lay in their power, and expressed a wish that the Revs. E. Williams, W. H. R iot, and'T. G. Carr, would arrange as to the dates on which they would respectively hold service thyre. In the event, however, of their being unable' to co-operate harmoniously in the mutter, and as they were equally entitled to the use of the school-room, the school committee agreed to furnish the ‘clergymen with the requisite infornyition as to the dates on which the building would be available for services in connection with the respective denominationsnamed. >
