School Appointment. — The time for receiving applications for the appointment of Tsaeher to the Gisborne Public School, has been extended to Tuesday next the 13th inst.

Melbourne Cur.—Mr. S. M. Wilson of the Argyll Hotel has organised a sweep stake on the coming event, the particulars of which will be found in our advertising columns. There are five prizes ranging from £8 to £BO, and as the spirited promoter has already disposed of a considerable number of tickets, we opine there will be little difficulty in filling up the list.

Pound Meeting.—Tfie meeting at Ormond on Thursday evening last, seems to have been anything but unanimous in its opinion as to the desirability of having a Public Pound erected in that township. Practically, the matter stands just in the aarr.e position as it did before the meeting took place. A resolution affirming the question was carried by a majority of two, while a counter-resolution was carried by a majority of six, that the erection of (he Pound be deferred for a period of twelve months, at the end of which time it is quits possible that another meeting will take the matter into further consideration.

Ladies Benevolent Society,—A meeting of ladies took place at Mrs. Rourke's residence in Lowe Street on Monday last, for the purpose of organising a Ladies’ Benevolent Society. About 30 ladies were present, of of whom the following were elected ns a committee:—Mrs. Bourke, Mrs. Crawford, Mrs. Root, Mrs. Webb, and Miss M. Nesbitt. The committee will meet on Friday evening, at Mrs. Root’s for the purpose of making arningements for an entertainment in aid of the funds of the society. We would beg to su gS e9 t to the ladies that at present no “ society” has been found, so that the committee really represent no one but them: selves. The usual method of proceeding is to pass preliminary resolutions, one of which should affirm the desirability of forming a society. The difficulty may be met by the ladies present on Monday enrolling themselves as members if they desire to do to.
