Building Society.—This Society advertizes for tenders for three sums of money to lend viz.. £l5O, £lOO, and £5O.

Bbda. —This celebrated one-legged gymnast arrived by the Rangatira on Sunday lust, and will shortly give another of his really first rate performance*. Education Ratb.—A notice appears this morning notifying that the rates for the current year will be payable at the Provincial Treasury on the 12th of July next. Eabtilquakb.—A shock of earthquake was felt in Gisborne on Monday morning a little before 8 o’clock. It was not a violent one, and but of short duration. Dividend. —Tt is announced that a dividend of 121 per cent, per annum is now payable on shares in the Auckland Steam Packet Company, at the office of the local agent, Captain G. E. Read. Gisbobnb School.—We learn that Mr. Lysnar has resigned his charge of the Gisborne School, having ncceptetT'an appointment to a Native school in the province of Hawke’s Bay. Odd Fellowship.—A meeting of shareholders in the proposed Odd Fellows’ Hall Company is convened for Wednesday evening nhxt the 16th inst., to consider and adopt the

Auction Sales.—Messrs Bryant & Co will sell to-day at the Queen’s wharf, and Messrs Graham & Co.’s stores, certain enumerated goods ex Rangatira, more or less damaged by sea water, vile advertisements. Game Licenses.—The Provincial Government Gazelle announces that Charles Westrup and James Poynter of Poverty Bay have, amongst 198 others, taken out. licenses to kill game. We always thought there was a capital opening for a retail poultry business in Gisborne, and we hope the spirited promoters of this branch of local industry, will find it a profitable undertaking. Our Member.—A facetious writer in the Auckland Rcho t under the signature of “ Crayon,” entitled “ Etchings in the gallery,” in individualising the members of the Provincial Council, thus speaks of the member for Poverty Bay:—The only resemblance between Mr. Johnson and the other name he bears is in his bow. He doesn’t twine exactly, but bends like the heads of the plant when shaken in the breeze. Let us hope he will never go where the ° Woodbine” twiiieth Mr. Woodbine Johnson want* £lOO for the Benevolent Society of Gisborne, in Poverty Bay. Nobody could refuse the money to a place with such a name as that. I think the people there ought never to change it. It may save them from being thought rich and taxed too heavily.

Roads.—We have been requested to draw attention to the state of the roads, although that would seem to be somewhat unnecessary, as their condition must be apparent to everyone without going outside the township. The complaint? seem to be directed against the withdraw al of the small amount of labor required to keep the ruts and drains free, so that the water can run clear of the traffic. Particularly is this noticeable in the town where one has to head a tolerably large lake in crossing from one side of the street to the other. While no apparent good can come of ladling fhe mud from one part of the road to another,, it seems to be desirable that the water tables (if there are any) aud courses should be kept clear.

Libel.—The Evening Star announces that another action for libel is threatened against its proprietors for having inserted a letter, describing, possibly, but too correctly, the voyage of Captain Casey’s steamer Gemini. In answer to which the Star says : '* If we closed our eyes and winked hard at everything proceeding around us, we could lead a quiet and peaceable life. It is our misfortune perhaps rather than our fault that we cannot do so, feeling that it is the duty of a free press to protect the public weal at whatever cost or inconvenienceand forwards the following characteristic reply to Captain Casey’s solicitors: w We beg respectfully to decline retracting the statements referred to, aud to state that it is contrary to our custom to pay such sums as that requested. You will therefore be so good as proceed with the action alluded to with as much expedition as may be convenient to your client.”
