ROAD BOARD.
The Board held its usual meeting on Monday last. The following letters were received:— From the Deputy Superintendent in reference to the Board renting the Immigrant cottages ; and after some discussion it was decided to let sat least at the rate of 8s a week, the rent to be paid in advance. From the Deputy Superintendent covering one from the Colonial Secretary in which the General Government refuse to undertake expenditure connected with Harbour improvements, urging that the usual course of Provincial Governments in other provinces is to take the charge into Provincial account. From the Deputy Superintendent relative to bringing the Slaughter-house Act into force in this district. The Board decided that on account of the state of the roads during the winter months, it is not desirable to bring the Act into force at present . Also one notifying the appointment of Mr. B. Steggall as Poundkeeper. From Mr. W. Adair, requesting Board’s sanction to increase of 6d per ton additional wharfage for merchandise, The Board decided to consider the matl er. From Mr. DeMoidrey calling attention to the dangerous state of the bridge near Captain Bead’s wool-shed. It was decided that the necessary repairs should be effected without delay. From the Deputy Superintendent in reference to the Williamson Memorial. After some deliberation, an unanimous conclusion was arrived at that the letter should be replied to stating that the matter had been placed before the public but that the Board is not in a position to vote any money for such a purpose. It was proposed by Mr. Caulton and seconded by Captain Bead :—“ That as soon as the sanction of the natives is obtained for carrying the oullet drain through the native reserve to Waikanae, tenders are to be called for cutting the same.” Mr. John Drummond was appointed Engineer to the Board on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr. Breingan. The Engineer was instructed to take levels for cutting drains and forming road from Kaiteratahi to Ormond.
A memorial was received from several settlers, addressed to the Minister of Public Works, praying that a sum of money may be expended on the road beyond Scott’s crossing. The Board decided to forward same to the Government with favorable recommendation.
