ANSWER TO “OBSERVER.”

Sir, —In yesterday’s Herald T see that some person signing himself ‘ Observer” states boldly that the horses sold on Saturday last are incorrectly quoted, which is not. a fact; and as for your quotation® being based on imagination alone, 1 challenge “Observer” to rail at. my office when I will give him, or any one else, a list of the purchasers names, by which he will see that the prices stated are correct. His statement that the “ best horse in the mob was sold for £9 ” is also incorrect, as 1 never sold a horse for that amount, and as for your report, doing injury to the district I consider the reverse is the case. Since 1 arrived I have raised the price of horse flesh 50 per cent. No doubt “ Observer ”is a disappointed man in not getting horses at his own price. The horses sol on Wednesday last, I had nothing to do with, and were sold after your Trade Report appeared. Perhaps the prices suited “Observer” better than those prices realized by the undersigned on the Saturday previous. Your quotation about vegetables is also correct, and the person who can contradict the fact of them being both scarce and dear must be like unto them—very “ green ” indeed.— Your®, &c., W. Robertson, Stock Salesman of 20 years’ standing. [We are obliged to Mr. Robertson for his unsolicited letter.—Ed. Standard ]

Sir, —In yesterday’s issue of the Poverty Bay Herald, 1 read a letter signed “ Observer ” in reply to which 1 can say that the price I am asked, and pay for, a single cabbage is 6d, which I consider a high price for a vegetable requiring so little care in the culture; and that Mr. Robertson, who sold the horses the other day informed me that he sold one horse at £l7 IDs. —Yours, &c., SPECTATOR.
