Hokitika, December 18. Arrived : — Tararua, from Melbourne, bringing cablegrams to the Btk inst. Capt. Nares, the Commander of H.M.S. Challenger, has been appointed to the command of the new Polar expedition. Sir Arthur Gordon, late Governor of Mauritius, has been appointed Governor of Fiji. December 8. Prince Bismarck, in defending the suppression of the Legation at the Vatican, withdrew the conciliatory remarks which he made on a former occasion, in order to prevent misrepresentation. He said he liad sought peace from Rome on any terms, but diplomatic relations were superfluous while the Pope urged the clergj' to break the law. GENERAL SUMMARY. London, October 30. A true bill has been returned against Dr. Keueally for libel. The prosecutrix is Mrs. Pittendreig, a witness against the claimant on the late trial. The testimonial consisting of a silver plate, that was voted by the Province of Otago to Capt. Jacquemart, for having rescued the shipwrecked emigrants off the New Zealand coast, was presented by Dr. Featherston to Marshal Maemahon,
in the presence of the French minister!, on behalf of the captain, who js on foreign service. t •»»
There were forwarded to New Zealand during September, 2262 emigrants. Tire emigration returns from Liverpool, for the quarter ending September 30, show a decrease of 9515 compared with those of last year. Bishop Sclwyn has been on a visit to Canada, where "he was warmly received. Stanley has arrived at Zanzibar in good health.
A deputation from Madagascar to the London Missionary Society reports that 1,000 churches have been formed, and that 30,000 people have abandoned idolatry. A tremendous gale swept the British Island, causing enormous loss and devastation. particularly on the north-west coast of Scotland.
A union between Russia and France on the Eastern question is on the tapis. Carlist atrocities are unabated. There is a rumour of German intervention, but it is not credited.
INDIA AND THE EAST. There have been floods in Central In- nl dia, causing loss of life and property. An earthquake at Cabal caused the deaths of 7,000 people.
