The Times contradicts the rumours, re the embarrassments of the Prince of Wales, and explains that although his income is insufficient to meet his expenditure he has met that difficulty by the realisation of the property of the Duchy of Cornwall.
A barge laden with gunpowder exploded on Regent’s Canal. Several lives were lost, and several hundred houses were injured. The explosion which took place at five o’clock yesterday morning is unprecedented. The barge had five tons of gunpowder aboard, and when the explosion occurred it blew up the bridge, and caused a great panic. Houses in close proximity were completely wrecked, and the explosion was heard ten miles off. The loss of life is confined to three bargemen, but the destruction of property is immense. In it is included the house of Alma Tadema. The buildings in the Zoological Gardens narrowly escaped injury.
