DEATH of EDWARD CATCHPOOL, Esq.
At ten o’clock on Saturday night, the 3rd instant, Edward Catchpool, Esq., peacefully passed away to his last home. He was one of the earliest settlers of this colony, and the good deeds of his life have left their mark behind him. Quiet and reserved in character, and little known except by those with whom he was most intimate, of few could it be more truly said that he carried out the scriptural injunction to do good by stealth. In his unostentatious but innumerable charitable deeds, he never let his left hand know what his right hand did, and many indeed will deeply regret the loss of one whose kindness and liberal benevolence shed around them happiness and bright prospects, or dispelled the darkness of temporary misfortune. Mr. Catchpool died at the ripe age of 68 years, and was an old and faithful servant of the Government from the service of which he retired on a pension, in 1867, when he was succeeded by Mr. Tabuteau, as Collector of Customs. He was also a Justice of the Peace, had acted as Postmaster at Port Ahuriri in the early days of the province, and had served in the capacity of Receiver of Land Revenue. Mr. Catchpool leaves no family behind him.— Napier Telegraph.
