THE EVENING STAR.
Star of the starless night, Star of the starry night, Star of the effulgent light, spreading thy knowledge bright Throughout the city. Shine and illuminate, nor cease to agitate Till ye eradicate matters effeminate Now from the city. All that thy watchful eye sees will intensify, Evils now running high, making a cloudy sky Over the city. When weak one’s ask’d thy aid, be they of lowest grade, Thy tone has never said, silence, ye in the shade, Dregs of the city. May falsehood fall dismay’d, and slink to inky shade, Ne’er will your columns fade when they in truth array’d Plead for the city. Friend in adversity, foe to perversity, Thy name in scarcity, without diversify, True to the city. Strike for the country, too, continue so to do, Gird up your loins anew, for now depends on ’ you, Country and city. Scan well the fallacy of Vogel’s policy, Let Cross and Herald see your cry shall ever be Country and city. Tom. Brown.
