ANNUAL LICENSING.

The first sitting of the Licensing Court under the new Licensing Aet. was held in the Court House Gisborne, on Tuesday last the 21st of April, W. K. Nesbitt, Esq.. R M. (Chairman), Charles Westrup, Esq , J P., J. W • Johnson, Esq., J.P., and J. B. Poynter, Esq., J.P., Commissioners. The following applications were made for RENEWAL OF LICENSES : — Alexander Blair, Argyll Hotel Gisborne, granted. S. C. Caulton, Masonic Hotel Gisborne, granted. Richard Kelly, Shamrock Hotel. No stable, and name not. over the door. Sergeant Shirley suggested that natives when drunk should not be served nt this house so much as they have been. The Resident Magistrate said there was a penalty attached to this offence, and the Court thought the police should give notice when the law is contravened. License was granted on conditions that the requirements of the Act are fulfilled. John Bradley, Albion Hotel Gisborne, granted. Lawrence Higgins, Roseland Hotel Mukaraka. No stable, house not furnished, accommodation incomplete, house not properly finished. The Court also urged that the conditions of the license had not been fulfilled, which stipulated that £lOO was to bo expended on sinking an artesian well. Mr. Higgins said he was unable to get. anyone competent to do the work, but he intended to have a trial made in about four months time. The Court decided to suspend the license until the requirements of the Aet are complied with.

Suspended accordingly. Alexander DaJziell, Makaraka Hotel Markaraka, granted. Alexander Hird, Royal Oak Hotel Matawhero, granted. Thomas O’Donoghue, Ferry Hotel Big River, granted. J. E. Green, Karawa Hotel, Karawa, granted. Alfred Tibballs, Murewai Hotel, Murewai, granted. George Saunders, Waerenga-a-hika Hotel Waerengti-a-hika. A complaint was made against the conduct of this Hotel some lime since, but Sergeant Mills on duty in that district reported that it had been since, and was now, well-conducted. The Court considered that the house was not properly conducted, and refused to renew the license for the present. If the police reported favorably before the expiration of the current year, a new license would be granted. John Villers, Chandos Hotel, Ormond, granted. Michael Mullooly, Sea View Hotel, Tologa Bay. Mr. Wilson, who appeared for the applicant, requested that this application be remitted to the Resident Magistrate nt Waiapu, as the Gisborne Court had no power to entertain it on account of the recent division of the district. Remitted accordingly. A similar application by Mr. Trimmer of Tologa Bay was also likewise remitted. Robert Magill, Ormond Hotel Ormond, granted. APPLICATION FOR ORIGINAL LICENSE. George Chirk, Royal Hotel, Gisborne. The house is in course of erection, applicant sai 1 it would be finished in the course of a month. The Court considered that no further hotel accommodation is wanted in the township at present. In answer to questions from the Chairman, Mr. Kelly and Mr. Bradley said that they had accommodation sufficient to do more trade they were now doing, which confirmed the Court in their opinion, and the certificate was accordingly refused. Mr. Wilson subsequently apnlied on behalf of Mr. Clarke that the matter might remain in abeyance for two months, so as, in the meantime, to obtain the wishes of the residents in the neighborhood with respect to it. The Court assented on the understanding that it was not committed to anything definite thereby. Thomas Bell, Scott’s crossing. Mr. Cuff appeared for the applicant and requested that a certificate be granted for a general license with a recommendation that the fee be reduced to £2O in consideration of the applicant maintaining a punt to ferry passengers across the river, granted. APPLICATION FOB BUSH LICENSE. Arthur Cuff, Mungatu. License to be granted on completion of repairs to premises. WHOLESALE LICENSES. The following applications were granted :— Andrew Graham, Samuel Tomlin Horsfall, William Teat, George Edward Read, James Buchanan. BBEWERS LICENSE. Mr. Whitson applied for a Brewers’ License, which was granted.
