THE MAILS.
The following letter has been received by G. R. Turner, Esq., Manager of the Bank of New Zealand in Gisborne, from the General Post Office, at Wellington : — “ General Post Office, “Wellington, 25th February, 1874. “ Sir, —I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of a letter signed by yourself and others, complaining that the Wellington mail for Poverty Bay, despatched by the Rangatira, on the 14th instant, in consequence of having been enclosed in the mail for Napier failed to reach Gisborne by the steamer in which it was despatched, causing considerable inconvenience and probable loss to the inhabitants of the district. In reply, I have to express regret for the inconvenience occasioned through the non-receipt of the mail in question by the Rangatira, and to state that the delay was unavoidable, and is to be attributed to the fact that the Rangatira sailed from Napier before the time officially announced to the Cliicf Postmaster, Napier, by the Agents. “ 1 have the honor to be, “ Sir, “ Your obedient Servant, “W. Gray, “ For the Secretary.”
