Church Meeting. — A meeting of members of the Church of England was held in the Court House on Monday evening last, the Ven. Archdeacon Williams in the Chair, to consider the advisability of accepting the tenders received for the erection of a Church building in Gisborne. It appears that the lowest tender according to specification was £760, but it was thought that considerable reductions in material might be made so as to lessen the cost. As to ways and means, there was £270 on the subscribers list, to which may be added £75 promised by the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge, and he, the Chairman, knew of other assistance which would come from outside so soon as it was seen that we were doing our utmost to help ourselves. Mr. Hardy and others said they thought a further considerable sum might be raised in the district. Mr. Steele suggested that as an item of saving, Kahikatia timber should be used instead of Kauri. A long discussion ensued in which a general desire was expressed that the building should be proceeded with at once ; and many other suggestions were made, one of which was the advisability of substituting a more economical style of seat. Ultimately the following resolution, moved by Mr. Webb and seconded by Mr. Wilson, was unanimously carried: — “ That the Committee be instructed to ascertain what probable reduction can be made in the specification, by substituting Kahikatia for Kauri timber, in addition to the reductions already suggested ; and that if by this means any satisfactory tender can be obtained, the building should be at once proceeded with.” The names of Messrs. Wilson and Turner were added to the Committee. Mr. Webb suggested that no tenders be invited from outside the district, which was agreed to. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings.
