MELBOURNE. January IG. After a long drought, heavy rain has fallen for three days, doing much good. The weather is again hot. The Clans and Reckel Company will visit New Zealand. The ‘ City of Melbourne ’ takes the Californian mail from Sydney, the ’ Alik ado ’ not having arrived. Breadstuff’s are very firm, at £l3 to £l3 10s; wheat is much wanted, at 5s lOd to 6s ; oats are very saleable up to ss. A parcel of New Zealand brought 4s 8d ; maize is rising in value, 5s 6d. Mauritius advices state that the ‘ Farningham ’ sailed for Dunedin and Lyttelton on the 27th of November. THE ENGLISH CRICKETERS AGAIN BEATEN. The English cricketers are faring rather badly at the hands of the colonial players. In the first match they were shamefully beaten in one innings, the second was a draw, and in the third they have been beaten by a trial team by ten wickets. The Stawell match was concluded in two days, and the number of wickets lowered in the time is unparalleled in the history of Australian cricket. The English first innings closed for the small score of 48. Tbe Stawell Twentytwo made 71. The Eleven in the second innings made 90, leaving the trial team 'only 64 to get. a number that was obtained with the loss of 11 wickets. G. F. Grace made 30 ; Southerton, 15 ; W. G. Grace, 14; Oscroft, 33, were highest, and almost the only scores in the second innings. The bowling of Costick and Conway was splendid. In a single wicket match six English professionals scored 2; Stawell, 29. In the Warnambool match, the trial twelve scored sixty-eight in the first innings, and the eleven were disposed of for 104. Jupp played a splendid innings of 58, not out. W. G. Grace, 18 ; Mclntyre, 13; Oscroft, 5; while five of England’s players were credited with a “duck’s egg.” In the second innings, the Warrnambool scored 51. The eleven won by nine wickets. They play Sydney next, and Melbourne on February 19 th. SYDNEY. January 16. A new Ministry has been formed in Queensland, McAlister premier. The policy includes gradual adoption of ad valorem duties, immigration, and free selection, with limited area.
