CHURCH MEETING.
A meeting of the members of the Church of England and others interested, was held in the Court House, Gisborne, on Thursday evening last, when a goodly number of persons attended. The Ven. Archdeacon Williams occupied the chair, and laid before the meeting a report of the action that had been taken by the Bishop and himself since the project was first started of building a Church in the township. A letter from Mr. Keals, an architect, in Auckland, giving estimate and plan of a proposed building for about £3OO was also read.
In answer to a question the Archdeacon said that a grant of £75 would be made in aid of the proposed building by the Foreign Bible Society on condition that the Church when completed
should be out of debt, and that the money should be used before the expiration of five years. Mr. Hardy said that the subscription list amounted to about £145, all of which, he believed could be depended on ; and he thought steps should be taken to augment that sum at once. An animated discussion took place as to the advisability of appointing an Episcopal Clergyman to this Cure at the present time, consequent on the Chairman stating that Bishop Williams had sent to England for one, —but no decision was taken on it.
The following resolutions were ultimately passed:— “ That steps should be taken for the erection of a church as soon as possible.” “ That a committee be appointed to carry out the above resolution.” “ That the committee consist of Archdeacon Williams, Mr. Hardy, and Captain Porter.”
