Melbourne, Oct. 1. A despatch received from Earl Kimberley strengthens the position of the Government in the Mount and Morris case. A complete list of the English cricketing team was received by the mail. They will leave England in October. Don Juan has been heavily backed—one hundred to eight for the Melbourne Cup. Mr. Walter, owner of the Marquis of Lome, steeplechaser, has commenced an action of a thousand pounds damages against the Australasian for libel. Sir Charles Gavan Duffy proceeds to England in April for a holiday. It is rumoured, on good authority, that the Government intend to annex Fiji within the next few months. Sydney. Mr. Parkes received a letter from Mr. Vogel stating that the New Zealand Parliament had ratified the Joint Californian contract. Every effort would be made to facilitate building ships. The first steamer of the interim service would leave Sydney about the 16th of December for Fiji, Honolulu, and San Francisco. Numerous cases of sunstroke, some fatal, have occurred here. Sir Alfred Stephen took his final leave of the Supreme Court in an affecting speech. His successor has not yet been appointed.
