Buckland reports fat cattle lower in price, quotations being from 27s to 30s per 100 lbs.; fat sheep, 5d to s|d per lb.; merino wethers, half fattened, Ils to 13s; fairly fattened, 14s to 17s each ; fat lambs, scarce, at from 17s to 21s. Wellington. Hcnare Mat ua, and other Napier and Poverty Bay chiefs, gave a dinner to the chiefs in Wellington at the Post Office Hotel. There was a good spread. The only Europeans present were Messrs. E. W. Stafford, Swanson, and Sheehan, M.H.R.’s. No toasts were proposed, but there were a number of speeches made. The general tenor of them was a distrust of Mr. M‘Lean. Dunedin, Oct. 4. A Rowing Club has been started here under favorable auspices. The sum of £59,050 has been received at the Treasury for pastoral rents for the year terminating September 30. Hokitika, Oct. 4. A fire broke out this morning in the premises of the Bank of New Zealand. By great exertions, the fire was confined to the Bank. The front of the Empire Hotel, situated just opposite, has the appearance this morning of a mass of charcoal. The Town Hall and the Bank adjoining narrowly escaped. The books of the Bank of New Zealand were saved. The buildings and furniture were insured for £2,500.
