Dr. Begg, of Edinburgh has obtained leave from the Presbytery to visit New Zealand. The wool sales closed firmly. They comprised about 200,000 bales, of which 120,000 had been taken for the Continent. Mr. Samuels (New South Wales Colonial Treasurer) is actively engaged in furthering his postal mission. The Hon. Mr. Wodehouse, Lord Kimberley’s brother, is dead. The Dover Castle left on June 30th, with immigrants for Otago; the Celestial Queen, on June 27th, for Canterbury, and the St. Leonards, for Auckland, on 19th, both with immigrants. The wife of Marshall Bazaine has petitioned for her husband’s immediate trial. Hemp market is heavy; there is only a limited demand; low qualities and ordinary, £lB 5s to £2l 10s; toppers, (?) £l9 to £l9 15s; medium, more or less dressed, £22 to £25 ; good to clean, £27 10s; good to fine dressed, £2B 10s. New Zealand honey, £35 per cwt-. (?) Kauri gum—fine, clear pale—£62 to £72. Sailed—St. Leonards, for Auckland; Mary, for Wellington; Douglas, Bebington, and Rokely Hall, for Otago; Whitehall and Celestial Queen, for Canterbury. The Birmingham Daily Post it full of correspondence on immigration to New Zealand. The Holyhead breakwater has been opened by the Prince of Wales. Prince Arthur narrowly escaped drowning at Thionville, and was saved by a French waterman.
