Thb Hawke? s Bay Herald of the 11th July announces with much regret, the death of Major Cummings, the officer commanding the Constabulary stationed in the Wairoa district. He had served with much distinction as an officer in the 57th Regiment, both in India and the Crimea. He was greatly esteemed, and, it is not too much to say, beloved by his men.
Ireland’s population decreased during the quarter ending June 80, 24,081. The number of inhabitants in the country is now fewer than in 1804, and has fallen off over 8,000,000 in the last 25 years. The lend under tillage is less by 184,945 acres than in 1871, and more than 1.000,000 acres than in 1860. Small traders in the provincial towns are failing in bnsmsss, all of which foots indicate a condition of things not parallelled at the present time in any other countryin the civilised world.
Ma. J. Dargavillk, according to the Hew Zealand Herald, has delivered an address to the Queen-street electors on the subject of the coming election, two hours in length, in which he raised “ several important questions."
Napibb is likely to be well supplied with newspaper accommodation, for we learn that, according to the Telegraph, “ The Maoris are liberally subscribing the funds necessary to start and maintain a daily journal. The proposed newspaper, in addition to a daily issue in the English language, is to include a weekly edition in Maori, and if all we hear be true, we have no doubt that the venture will be a pecuniary success in the hands of its projectors." In addition to this the Hawke’s Bay Times is about to be revived in an enlarged form.
