CORRESPONDENCE.

[Our columns are open for free discussion; but we do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions of our Correspondents.]

TO RAHARUHI RUKUPO, AND OTHER CHIEFS OF TURANGA.

PBB FAVOR OF THE POVBBTY BAY STANDABD. Friends, —Do not exalt the evil works, rather seek to crush them, lift up the right only. By your invitation Henry Matua has come to this district, bearing with him his dangerous opinions, for the purpose of beguiling you. You expect Henry Matua to restore to you the lands you have fairly sold to the Europeans. Listen not to his words. I should have thought the disasters that have already overtaken you sufficient, yet you would seek to draw down further misfortune upon yourselves. Let me tell you, your land can never be restored through your being guided by the ideas of Henry Matua. You sold to the Europeans, now you would seek to act in bad faith. And yet this restless spirit is not new to J ou, for when Kereopa (the murderer) arrived ere, did you not turn at once to his evil works ; then came Te Koti, did you not go over to him ; now comes Henry Matua, and at once you adopt his views of matters, whether for good or bad, who can say the result of his work will show ? In my opinion you would do well to close your ears to his specious words, these can never bear fruit. I have finished. From Kate Wyllie.
