WELLINGTON. July 5. The hon. Dr. Pollen has been gazetted Colonial Secretary, vice Mr. Reynolds, resigned. The Government has arranged with Messrs. M'Mectan and Blackwood for a six months’ service each way to connect with the P. and O. •Company mail boats at Melbourne. A contract boat is to leave Melbourne immediately after arrival of the mail, proceeding to Hokitika; thence to Wellington, Lyttelton, Port Chalmers, and the Bluff. The time to be eight days to Wellington, ten to Lyttelton, eleven to Port Chalmers, but, practically, whenever a steamer arrives at Wellington early on the eighth day, she will arrive at Port Chalmers on the tenth day. The outward mail will be conveyed to Melbourne in twelve days from Dunedin, eleven from Lyttelton, nine from Wellington, six and a half from Hokitika. The steamer Paterson, is to convey from Nelson. The time from Melbourne to Manukau is to be nine days. The service will be commenced in Melbourne on the arrival of the English mail, due there on the Bth inst., and at Dunedin, for outward mails, <on the Ist August. July 7. Sailed: Glimpse, for the East Coast. The whole of the Australian squadron will •rendezvous at Wellington in September or October, to meet the new Commodore, who comes in his flag ship via the Cape direct here. Commodore Stirling goes home in H.M.s. Clio. CHRISTCHURCH. July 4. The directors of the New Zealand Shipping Company have received an offer from Shaw, Saville & Co. for the transfer of their business and ships. The offer has been absolutely declined bv the directors, who intend taking an independent position. TAURANGA. The coach arrived at 3.30 p.m. There was a public reception, and an archway was formed. A riding party met the coach some eight miles out, and formed a guard of honor. grahamstown. July 7. The fortnightly gold returns are as follows:— Golden Crown, 157 ozs.; Kurunui, 370 ozs. ; Nolan’s Candlelight, 684 ozs. Several more returns are to come.
