TO THE EDITOR OF THIS STANDARD.

Sir, —-I wish to make a few observations respecting the subject circulated on Wednesday, at the Ratepayers’ meeting, viz., extending the boundaries of the Highway district. Now, sir, as it requires two to make a bargain, the question naturally arises, are those settlers living in the districts proposed to be annexed, willing to place themselves under the control of the Poverty Bay Highway Board ? I think it hardly likely that settlers between Gisborne and the East Cape will be willing to contribute to our rates, and more unlikely still that the Te Kapu (Wairoa) settlers will allow us to finger rates from that quarter. I for one certainly should not envy those gentlemen who might be honored with the control of such a district even for one year. I see by your last Wednesday’s issue that Mr. W. 8. Greene is not satisfied with the doings of the present Highway Board. I earnestly recommend him him to stand for election on the ensuing Board, when, if elected, he might suggest some improvements in that department, and, when after giving a little of his time to the service of the public, will, I assure him, be little disposed to grumble at the shortcomings of any future Board. —I am, sir, yours truly, ‘ 8. Parsons. Matawhero, June 2,1873.
