The Woegan Commission.—This Commission will open on Monday next before Colonel Russell, who will sit as sole Commissoner, Major Edwards as one of the three who reported Mr. Worgan to the Government being relieved from his duties as Commissioner, but we understand he will act as prosecutor on behalf of the Government. We hear that there are three charges to be investigated viz., one of having partly bought land from a Native On behalf of the Government at 10s. per acre and afterwards having taken that Native to Mr. H. S. Taylor and negotiated a sale between that gentleman and the Ma< ri for the land in question at 15s. per acre; one of having entered into a partnership with Mr. Donald Smith, who was to find funds to purchase land allotted to Natives by Mr. Worgan through that gentleman, who was to use his power as allotter to secure advantageous bargains to Smith and himself; and finally one of having used improper means to make Major Turner relinquish his lease of some 800 acres of land in the Waitotara block and afterwards turning Turner’s lease to his own profit. We do not of course express any opinion upon these charges as they are subjudice, but we think it is due to both Mr. Worgan and his prosecutor that the case should be openly and fully investigated so that the public may see for themselves how much of truth there has been in the rumours that for so long a time past have been rife in Wanganui, concerning the above charges, which we sincerely hope for the credit of Mr. Worgan and Mr. McLean who places so great an amount of confidence in him, are unfounded. — Wanganui Chronicle.
