Xs* To-DAv’s issue ill era are two notices which are deserving' of particular attention, those are the advertisements of the Cricket Club and the Sport’s Association ; two institutions d serving the earnest assistance of all who arc capable of talcing interest in any manly games at all. Cricket hj s undoubtedly boon on the ‘‘ languishing ” sum for some seasons, and uuIpss tin effort is made to keep it going, it bids fair to follow' in tiro wake of localiasli aliens and full to the ground. It is to bo hoped, therefore, that our local cricketers will turn up in strength on Saturday, and give the club a good ‘•send off" for the coming season. The other notice to which wo refer is the Spar is Association's, who are to tlie fore in much belter time this year than last, and have started in time to got up n really good day’s programme and in this wo hope they will bo successful Xew Year’s day is iho I’ateau’s day nt home, and the coining New Year’s day oilers peculiar reasons fur .nniking uicst strenuous efforts to make a big day of it,’' It is expected lo be the last day of the Exhibition week, and one, therefore, upon which wo may fairly expect to have very many visitors from other towns, and also from tlm country districts, and as everyone who conies here, will, no doubt, wish to see everything that is going, a largo attendance ou (ho spoi ts ground may be fairly counted upon A good attendance always makes a day g*» well, but to plea so a good attendance, a goad programme is a sine (j n -won, and to m ,k ■ a pro gram mo that will ‘‘draw ’ good entries, prizes wonh competing for must be given, so that the necessity of making pro vision for a reasonable number of events, and good prize money, will be at once apparent, and wo hope the meeting now called by Ills Wo ship will take as liberal a view of the matter as possible, and ©udoavour to re-
awoken some of the, now sleeping*, merest which used to centre in our local annual sports, and secure a committee of earnest workers who will second the efforts of hlr Adams in bringing- round a really successful uny s sports. A holiday, especially at Christmas time, is very generally taken advantage of for “ taking a i un ” either into the country or to some neighbouring town, and with the peculiar attractions which our radiibitio:i will, hold out, no doubt tin’s town will be much chosen by our neighbours fur holiday risking: let us linn show our visitors that wo yet understand what a day’s am nsennneat should be like, and. that knowing it. wo are not going to hide our light under a busiiel, but rather exhibit it from the house-tops, for general amusement and recreation by preparing such a programme as will at onco bo attractive to contestants and entertaining- to visitors. Once start work with such a do term: nation and under the auspices of a committee formed of men with some “go” in them, and there is no reason 10 fear the result. Loll up in strength on Thursday evening, and give the project a good hearty support, and success is certain, and a briglit beginning for the New Year may bo honestly expected, and the year bo begun as it oiuht to bo—with a happy reunion of friends, and a day of universal happiness and enjoyment.
