RETRENCHMENT.

Tho following is given by tho Wellington correspondent of the Herald, as the probable mode of retrenchment to be suggested by tho Financial Btatemont. I have tlio best authority for giving tlio following as a presage of the Financial S.atement to bo delivered on Tuesday next. Tlio school ago is to six years, and that capitation will be reduced by live shillings, in -ho vnvi ous departments i believe there will not bo a uniform redaction such as ten per cent, but a lump sum will be taken off each department and Minis ers will have the reduc ions ia their various departments left in their own hands. Couufiy corps '- ill be reduced out of existence, us capitation will be cut off a;together, whbu capitation for seaport corps will bo reduced. In addition to tho property tux. Govern mont will propose to have an iucoum tax of it small amount, but so far as I can ascertain, no laud rax. The Crown and Native Laud Act will be repealed, and also tho Loans to Local Bodies Act. There will be proposals for a million loan, and a gumaikeo will be giv n that rhurn will be no further borrowing for tho next three years It is estimated that the reduction consequent on tlio proposals of the Government will result i;i a r daction of expenditure of from £280,0 U to TJOo.OUU, but tho deiiciency is ex peeled to be £l‘'U,(L().
