London, Oct. 23. —Evictions at Wexford are being violently resisted, and three bailiffs have been horribly injured by vitrol being thrown
over them.
Lord Randolph Churchill, addressing a meeting of 4000 persons at Newcastle, answered Mr Gladstone’s indictment against tho police and Government, and 'warned the; democracy that sympathy with anarchy meant ruin. His Lordship met with an excellent reception. It is reported that Lord Lytton [succeeds Lord Lyons as British Ambassador at Paris. Mr Gladstone is suffering from a severe cold. The Duke of Edinburgh has been promoted to the position of Admiral, and will probably be placed in command of the fleet at Portsmouth, Mr Chamberlain sails for America on Saturday to fulfil his duties as Chief British Commissioner on tbe Fisheries Commission. • The Paris correspondent of the Times bints that if it is considered preferable, there as t Islands near tho New Hebrides which France might occupy without dispute. He also states that the principle of the neutralisation of tho Suez Canal has been recognised by Franco, that tho International Commission will probably submit a scheme for the armed protection of the Canal and tbs creation of a neutral zone. The Orange Free State refuses to amalgamate with the Transvaal in order to form a new Republic. Le Temps says that England has consented o France annexing tbe leeward islands of the Tahitian Archipelago
