SECOND EDITION. THE TRIUMPH ENQUIRY.
+ The Vessel in Safety.
(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, This day. The Triumph enquiry was resumed to-day. The Crown Prosecutor snid a now phase in the case had arisen ; in fact the steamer had been floated off and brought into Auckland. He recalled the chief officer, who deposed that since the date of the last sitting, he was employed assisting operations to get the vessel off which were successful, and the vessel now lies in Auckland harbour. No external aid or apparatus were used to lift the ship beyond pumping, and nothing was done except taking out cargo and lightening her. Pumping has been kept up nearly all the way into harbour. The vessel had a strong list to starboard, that shows she must have a lot of cargo in her forehold on that side, beside Water. Had these stops been taken at first, he believed she would have been got off as readily. This closed the case for the Collector of Customs. Mr Hesketh said the course he proposed to take on behalf of.the Capt. was to lend evidence to prove the cause of the Capt. going to sleep, and be shonld also call evidence to rebut what had been several times suggested by the Crown though never directly that the Capt. was the worse for drink. He had witnesses who would prove this untrue. The Capt. had for some nights previously been suffering from some affection, and he had the evidence of a local medical gentleman to prove that ho had been consulted by Capt. Brotherlon for the same affection. Henry Parker, Tide Surveyor, and Boarding Officer of Customs, was on. board the Triumph two minutes before she left. He conversed with the Capt. and saw nothing unusual in his manner. He did not appear to be suffering from drink. The enquiry is proceeding.
