ENGLISH CAPITALISTS IN AMERICA.

The Alta California states that English capitalists are playing great havoc in certain portions of the United States. “ One company,” it is stated, “ has bought no less than 2,500,000 acres in Nebraska and adjoining territories, while Horace James, as agent for another, is in treaty for'an immense tract of country in the neighbourhood of the same State.” The Alta adds “ British capitalists do not confine their land speculations to the United States, 1 A Scotch company has closed a for 1,000,000 acres in Chihuahua ; but it is to be said in favour of this company that it buys to sell again, to hold indefinitely. Small from Texas will go across the line ar buy the land in tracts of size for pasture. When foreign capitalists acquire land in the United States, however, they hold it permanently, and the larger the quantity, the more they object to parting with it. The difference is that by the Mexican law non-residents are not permitted to bold land more than two years, whilst in the United States they can maintain their title for over. In some cases the Mexican law may appear illiberal and work injustice, ' but in the contrast cited above the advantage is all on the side of Mexico.”
