ROYAL MILITARY JOBBERY.

A very pretty little military job, intended for the benefit of H.R.H. the Duke of Connaught, has been nipped in the bud in rather an amusing way. When it was first announced, people wondered why a Royal Prince should have, been sent to command at Meerut—a fever stricken spot, so often : stigmatised as the white man’s grave. But it was never intended that the Duke should stay at Meerut. Within four months from the present-date the post of Commander-in 1 Chief in Bombay will fall vacant by the retirement of Sir Arthur Hardinge. It was all arranged that the Duke of Connaught, as next in seniority on tlje spot, should succeed to the command. Jnst at the eleventh hour, however, an unfortunate discovery was made. This was the existence of a certain Major-General Phayre, also on the spot, and commanding a division at the spot, and commanding a division at Mhow. General Phayre is a long way senior to the Duke of Connaught, and by no possible means could be passed over. When the Bombay command falls vacant, therefore, it must go to Phayre, if it is to be given locally ; if not, some one must be sent out from England. In no case, however, could the Duke of Connaught succeed ; and thus this very clever scheme ,is altogether dished.— World.
