THE INVENTOR OF THE BICYCLE.
The Cyclist states that a handsome monument will shortly be erected to the memory of the late James Starley, the. inventor of the modern bicycle and tricycle, whose death was recorded some months ago. The subscription was raised by cyclists, who arc now reaping the benefit of his labours. Over one hundred designs were received by Hie Secretary of the Fund Committee, the successful one being submitted by Messrs Whitehead and Sons, monumental sculptors, of Westminster. The monument consists of a figure of Fame, supported by six gt anile pillars, on a base rcs'ing on four larger ones, the panels between which bear relieved representations of Mr Starlcy himself and his masterpieces. The whole design is handsome and appropriate, and wo learn that endeavours arc being made to obtain permission to place it on Grey Friar’s Green, or some other suitable position in the City of London. The full height of the monument is to be 20ft, and it will have an imposing effect.
