LONDON, Dec 7. A portion of the cargo of frozen mutton, ex Fenstanton, from Lyttelton, was placed on the market to-day, and realised 6 per lb. - I Dec 8.
A portion of the cargo of frozen meal ex Lusitania was sold to-day at an average price oiToJd per lb. The moat was in good condition. It has transpired that the Chinese Government continue to adopt a firm and unyielding attitude in the negotiations ;Which a'ref how proceeding for the of the Tonquin difficulty, and have refused, either .to withdraw or modify their claims in Tonqnin, and are prepared to appeal to arms rather than to surrender to France the military posts in Tonqnin‘ which are now occupied by Chinese troops. Dec 8.
The parleying which for some time past has been proceeding between the Marquis Tseng and M. Ferry regarding the Tonqnin difficulty is still proceeding. Nothing, however, is definitely known regarding the progress which- has been made with the negotiations.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 8
A deputation of members of the United States Congress has petitioned President Arthur to obtain from the British Government a respite for O’Donnell, convicted of the murder of James Carey, arid upon whom a sentence of death was passed on the Ist inst.
CAIRO, Dec 6.
Despatches to hand from the Soudan state that the panic which arose at Khartomn, in consequence of the expectation that El Mahdi would advance and besiege the town after having annihilated the Egyptian army under Hicks Pasha, is subsiding, the rebels having shown no intention of taking advantage of the weakness of the garrison to make an attack/ Dec 9.
Despatches to hand from Souakim dated theStH ins.t.,state that an attack in force was made on that date by Arab Hillmen upon the Egyptian troops, who have been despatched as re-inforcements for the garrison at Souakim. The attack Was made some distance outside the town, and resulted in the destruction of five companies of Egyptian troops.
