SUICIDE OF A SAILOR.
A suicide, under somewhat peculiar circumstances, took place on board tlje lonic on the 6th inst, three days before the vessel’s arrival at Wellington. A seaman named Kappell, a native of England, about fifty years of age, went aft and asked two girls, who were standing near the taffrail, to make room for him. Thinking that he had something to do there, they stepped aside, when he mounted the rail and dropped into the sea. The thing was done with such extraordi- a nary coolness and deliberation that the two girls did not realize for some minutes that the man had but little chance of regaining the ship, and they afterwards stated that they believed he had only gone over for a swim. When they reported the occurrence, a boat was instantly lowered, and the engines reversed, bat after a search of an hour the vessel proceeded on her way. The act is quite unaccountable to the officers, who had noticed nothing wrong with the man. It is believed that Kappell formerly held a good position, haying been a master in the merchant service.
