COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Council met on, Wednesday morning. Present-Chairman and Crs Bridge, Wilson, Howie, Dmie, Sullivan, Foreman, and Morgan. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was read from the Undersecretary staling that a voucher' for £263 3s 2d had been passed in settlement of claim by Council against Government for Hospital maintenance. It was resolved that the Chairman, Councillors Bridge and Foreman be a committee to examine and compare the Government’s accounts with the accounts of the Council and take the necessary action; to report to next meeting. The Trustee in G. Beamish's estate wrote accepting amount of £lO 7s due for collars, &c. Agreed to. COONTV accounts. A letter was read from the Government Auditor re the accounts, and asking for certain explanations. As the letter was received only the previous day, the matter was referred to the Clerk. OEEICR RESERVE. The Council wont into committee to road a letter from Mr Barton re claims for refund of rent for a bore. It was resolved, upon the motion of Cr Bridge, seconded by Or Foreman, “That Mr Stuart (Registrar) be informed that (bis Council propose to let the Reserve for County building, under section 20, Reserves Act, 1881, for 21 years, and that ho be asked whether he Would object to register such leases. On receipt of his reply the Chairman be empowered to take snch action upon the solicitor’s letter as he thinks fit.” ACCOUNTS PASSED. Patea Mail, £2 16s 9d ; pay-sheet, £l9 1 Is ; J Walsh, 10s ; W Wilson, 10s ; Jngo, 5s ; Handley, 8s 6d ; Trustee G. Beamish, £lO 7s; salaries, £6 13s dd ; Court fees, 8s; Hawera Star , £1 10s; travelling expenses three members attending conference at Hawera, £5 ; F Schmidtt, Waitotara, £d Is 6d. An account from Mr H P Mason, Wnverley, £.5 8s for stone taken at Mnnawnpon was referred back for explanation. With reference to Schmidt’s account some discussion took place over it. Cr Bridge pbjected to its payment on the ground that Schmidt had been ordered to supply a certain amount of gravel and had supplied so much more. He moved that the account be held over for a month, Cr Durie moved ns an amendment that the account be paid. A division was taken on the amendment. Ayes: Durie, Morgan, Horner, Howie. Noes: Bridge, O’Sullivan, Foreman. Amendment carried. The Council here (1.10 p.m.) adjourned for lunch. SETTLEMENT BETWEEN HAWERA AND PATEA. On resuming, after the adjournment, the resolution adopted by the Hawera Council was read as follows:—“ That subject to the Manawapou bridge approach on the Patea side being improved the Hawera County Council is prepared to agree to the settlement suggested by the Patea Councillors at the Conference." It was mentioned in the
letter that carters and travellers generally complain about the approach in question, there being a drop of about a foot. Oh a irjnan said that there was nothing like a foot. drop. They had. expected the clay' to settle, but: it had remained firm. ' The Clerk said it had been estimated that to lower the road would cost about > £9O.
Chairman said that was out of the question. The dork read the minutes of the conference. Cr Bridge explained the accounts and showed that Hawera was indebted to Palca to the extent of £143 Ss sd. Speaking of the - letter, he said that he did not feel indined to commili the Council to such a vague agreement. He would move Innt the minutes of the conference be received. Agreed to. Or Bridge moved that the Patea County Council agree to the arrangement made by the Patea and Hawera councillors at the Conference. Although they will not bind themselves to any conditions about improving the approach on the Patea side, of the Mountain hriige, the Hawera Council, may , rely upon it being-attended to, Seconded h\’ Cr Wilson nnd carried. - It was decided to ask the Hawera Council • fo ■ forward cheque as agreed upon. It was resolved—“ That, the Hawera County Council be informed that this Council agrees to the suggestion ma ic at the Conference; that the Me’koia Reserve be .brought under the Domain Act, (he Hawera Council to- take the necessary ..steps,”
MANAWAPOU, HILL. Proposed by Or Bridge, seconded by Or Morgan, and carried “ Tiiat lenders be invited by 14;h inst. lor caning metal on Mahawapon hill, andthal Abe Chairman, bp empowered to open and accept the same, an ! to emp'oy the men required for spreading.” SPECIAL MEETING. Chairmm mentioned that a special meeting would have to be held on the 28th inst. for the election of Chairman. For the sake, of convenience it was decided to hold the ordinary meeting on that day, PATEA BRIDGE. . • Cr, Bridge, said ftbaj, die desired to call the attention of ithe Borough Council to the Jiad state; of the Pa tea bridge. There were boles there in the planking a couple feet long and two inches wide. Ho would move that the Council's .attention be cal'ed to the matter. Carried. PAYMENTS. Cr Bridge moved—“ That for the fntnreriio payments of accounts be made or progr ss payments, unless the claim has been passed at the previous meeting.,, - Seconded by Cr Foreman and carried, Cr O’Sullivan dissenting. DOG TAX. The collector reported that 247 dogs had been registered. THE HOSPITAL. A deputation, consisting of Messrs R. A. Adams and W. " Williams, representing the Hospital Committee, waited upon; the Council. A report of the interview appears elsewhere. WAIROA HIGHWAY' BOARD. Moved by Cr Wilson “ That a apecial order be made dissolving the Wairoa Highway Board from this .day/’ Seconded by Cr Dnrie. Cr Bridge asked if it would not be ns well to hold over the order for a month. He believed that at next meeting a petition would he presented from a portion of the district asking to be declared a separate district. If they hail to make another order it would make it expensive for the Wairoa Board. Cr -Wilson thought the sooner it was done the better. They could not avoid the expense. There was no petition before the Council. The motion was put and carried,.Cr Bridge not voting. Cr Wilson proposed, “ That Mr F. P. Fookos he appointed Clerk and Returning Officer under sub-section 1, section 44, Road Boards Act, for the Whcnnaknrn-Wailotara Highway District. Seconded by Cr Durie and carried. It was also moved and carried “ That the first Wednesday in the month of December next be the day for the election of the new Board for the Whennaknra-Wnilotara Highway District and that the first meeting of the new Board be held seven days after the meeting. Notice of motion to niter the day ol meeting from Wednesday to Thursday was given by Or Bridge and the Council adjourned.
