WAVERLEY HARMONIC SOCIETY

The entertainment and dance in aid of the funds of the WaverJey f Harmonic Society held on Tuesday evening last proved a great success. The committee evidently took every pains in making the arrangements as complete as possible, and both concert and dance went off without a hitch. One great improvement in the arrangement was noticeable viz, the extra stage for the orchestra and piano, which was tastefully decorated with evergreen* and pot plants, the effect being very pleasing to the eye., Over forty ladies and gentlemen look part in the performance, and ft was apparent in the glees and choruses that the conductor, Mr Ellis, had spared no pains in his efforts to render them as perfect as possible. The piano was ably’’ presided over by several ladies, each doing her part very satisfactorily. The solos were well appreciated and carefully chosen. Slight nervousness in some of the singers was visible. This is, however, invariably the case in a new society, and will no doubt wear off in time. The duetts and trios showed that they had been well practised. A rule of the society that no encores should be allowed, prevented some of the soloist* from again appearing, and some faction was expressed. The rule is quite - a customary one in societies of the sort, and where a long programme is given is very necessary. The hall was well filled, and the’fundsof the society will be considerablyaugmented. The dancewhich was kept up till 2 a.m. was also very successfully arranged, and was carried through with spirit, the music being provided by members of the society, several ladies kindly volunteering their services on the piano. Altogether a most enjoyable evening’s amusement was provided, and the public will look for the reappearance of tire society on an early date.
