REDUCTION OF THE NATIONAL DEBT.

A curious struggle has been proceeding at Home over the National Debt Reduction Bill, with which the chief Radical members of the Opposition who favour a reduction of taxation anil a reduction of the debt have been mollified, The real cause of the Tory opposition arises from a desire to prevent the present appropriation for annuities falling, due in 1885. The Tories are not without hope manipulating these annuities when they themselves may bo in office. As Mr Childers’ project embraces a reduction of £174,000,000 during the next twenty years, without an increase of taxation, it is strongly supported among the commercial classes and economists, who are fearful lest English commerce may be crippled when labour cheapens in America. This prospect and the rapid abolition of the United States debt causes growing anxiety among thoughtful Englishmen.
