SALE OF RACING STOCK.

There was a large attendance of the public at the late Mr Powdrill’s farm on Friday, when the racehorses which belonged to the deceased gentleman were submitted to auction by Mr Cowern. Evidence of the financial depression was manifested throughout the sale, many of the lots going at very low prices, in spite of the eloquent endeavours of the auctioneer to raise a little enthusiasm amongst his audience. Hailstorm was the first offered. He was looking extremely well, but bis condition did not excite a higher bid than lOOgs, and accordingly he was passed in, the reserve being 200gs. Tally-Ho was similarly passed at 50gs, but later in the day Mr John Moreton of Waverley became the purchaser at that figure. Daphne, a cream-coloured filly was knocked down to Mr Whishaw at*3lgs. Slilletto, a 2-year-old roan filly by Javelin—Discretion was passed in at 40gs, the best offer being 31gs. Stilletto cost her late owner lOOgs. Ringleader, the winner of the Wanganui Railway Plate found a purchaser in Mr Keith, who gave 31gs. Tantivy was bought by Mr W. L. Martyn, of Manaia for 18£gs. Experiment fell to the nod of Mr J. Shield for 22gs, and Silver Cloud to Mr S. Powell for 16|gs. Mr Drake, of Wheuuakura, secured Florence for The mare Discretion brought 15gs, and Clematis IBgs, both being purchased by Mr Mason, of Hawera. Mr O’Sullivan, of Kakaramea, obtained the Bishop of Osraanburg mare for 6£gs. A yearling filly by Hailstorm was passed in at Bgs, and a ladies’ hack, Dolly, was bought by Mr E. Payne for I3gs. Some racing plant and sundries were afterwards sold, and realised good prices.
