HANLAN DEFEATED.
A telegram from an American paper from Fall River, Mass., dated August 20, gives an account of the professional scull race in •which it appears Hanlan was defeated, The race took place in the evening, the start being postponed until six o’clock owing to rough weather and then the men were recalled from a false start. Some returned, but others, including Hanlan, Hosmer, and Teenier, rowed the course. Another race was ordered and Hanlan took the lead and turned the buoy first, followed closely by Ross and Hosmer, the others not far off. An excursion steamer from Providence ran among the boats and the
swell from her pndJh*-wheels swamped Hanlan, Elliot and Hosmer, Darkness coming on rapidly it was almost impossible to distinguish the contestants. At the finish Lee upset after crossing the lino and Driscoll drew out, half a mije from the start. At the close half a doz'm oarsnn-n surrounded the judge’s boat, several of them claiming first position. This was given to Teemer, who made two nod a half miles in eighteen minutes, twenty-six seconds; Hosmer second, eighteen minutes, Shirty seconds; Ross third, eighteen minutes, thirty-five seconds. Hanlan said he was beaten but “ didn’t feel badly abont it, didn’t cut his boat, wasn’t struck on the head and didn’t get anyone to put a wire round his buoy. He was glad of one thing—no monev was bet on him.” The other oarsmen claim Hanlan was really outrowed.
