RETIRING FROM SERVICE.

[per press association.] NELSON, This day. It is stated that Mr Shallcross, the gaoler here, is about to retire from that position. Government are sending a chief w.irder in his place and have granted him 12 months leave of absence and he is to have a retiring allowance. Mr Shallcross was chief of the Nelson police under the Provincial Government for thirteen years, and has held the office of gaoler nine years.
