ARRIVAL OF THE PHŒNIX PARK INFORMERS.
IDENTIFICATION COMPLETE. THEIR LANDING PREVENTED. [redter—copyright.] (Received August 4, C.55 p.m.) MELBOURNE, August 3. The steamer Pathan was boarded on entering the Heads by a party of police and the passengers mustered for inspection. Two Melbourne residents who accompanied the police, expressly declared themselves able to identify Kavanagh among those on board, stating that they were acquainted with him in Dublin. Hanlon, another of the Invincibles, admitted his identity, and pointed out Smith, the third of the party. No others, however, could be identified. The Government have prohibited landing of the informers in this colony, and they will therefore be compelled to remain on board the steamer until her departure. The action of Mr Service in the matter is met with unanimous approval. (Received August 4, 1.10 p.m.) • August 4. The steamship Pathan brings out 300 immigrants to New South Wales. The identification of Kavanagh, the informer, as one of the passengers, is complete i Hanlon evaded the general muster of those on board, but subsequently confessed as to bis own identity, and admitted that the others were Kavanagh and Smith. The captain declared that as Kavanagh was booked to Melbourne, he would land him there. The police, however, dissuaded (he captain from such a proceeding. There was a strong force of constables on board in view of a possible disturbance. The Argus to-day doubts the wisdom of preventing the landing of the informers,
and expresses an opinion that it will probably bo regarded as unfriendly towards England, and that it only tended to gratify the disaffected. INTERVIEW BETWEEN THE CAPTAIN & GOVERNMENT. THE PRESENT SITUATION. MELBOURNE, August 4. The captain of the steamer Pathan interviewed the Hon James Service today, and. protested strongly against the action of Government in preventing the landing of the Irish informers who were passengers by the Pathan. Government will come to a final decision in the matter on Mondayi and meanwhile the Invincibles will be compelled to remain under police supervision on board the steamer. i (Received August 6, 12.15 p.m.) MELBOURNE, This day, Hanlon and Kavanagh have admitted that they were placed on board the Pathan by the London detectives. Smith is bound for Sydney, and denies his and bis manner yesterday was most violent. The relations between the captain and officers of (he Pathan and the police have improved. The Pathan sails to-day for Sydney. Communications are passing between Mr Service and Mr Stuart, Premier of New South Wales, with a view to co-operation in the settlement of the difficulty. % LONDON, August 5.
