WAVERLEY.
[From our Correspondent.] Monday,
A meeting of those interested in the formation of n. Harmonic Society at •.Waverloy* was held on Friday last. Mr Elba, being voted to the chair, opened (he proceedings by reading the notice calling the, mooting, and calling on some of the gentlemen present to state the various views they field as to the best method of starting the Society. Some discussion took place ' as to .■whether the Society should be called a.Harmonic and Dramatic
Society, but a resolution in favour of a Harmonic Society only was carried! After considerable discussion as to ways and means, a committee was appointed consisting 6f Messrs Muir, Ellis, Swinbourne, Edwards, and Fookes. The- committee tlien held a meeting, and went into the matter thorough". A number of ladies and gentlemen’s names were given in as probable members and various other preInmnary arrangements made. Another general meeting of intending members is called for Friday, August 3rd, at which o ie committee will report progress. It is to ,be hoped- the undertaking this time will be supported, v Bushfallers are much wanted in this district at the present time, as most of the purchasers of sections in the Momahaki Block are going in extensively for clearing, and complain at the scarcity of good men. There is getting quite a demand for sections in this block, as there are now only a few of the Government sections still open for selection. Tire Government would do well, however, to do away with the township of Richardson and offer it for sale as rural land. The site chosen is most absurd for a township, and I - believe only three of the sections are sold, although it has been twice put up at auction. No doubt the land, which is a rich fern flat, would fetch a very high price if offered in a block. The Waverley Domain Board are going in for./ofnamenlal' planting on an extensive scale on the Recreation Ground and the Town Belt, and iu the course of a few years we shall boast of an excellent pleasure ground. Two of the Domain sections were put up for lease by Mr F. 11. Jackson, on Friday last, and both ■fetched, big prices, showing from the bidding that there is lots of money in the place. I sef? the Government have granted a sum to the County Council for expenditure on the main road between Waverley and Patea. It is to be.hoped a portion will be expended in the street near the Presbyterian Church here. It is simply a bog at the present time, and not only exceedingly inconvenient to church-goers, but highly dangerous at night time to travellers on the road. .1 hope our representatives in the Council;will look to this.
[We think that the sum referred to by our correspondent is a refund of money already spent, and that none is available just now. —Ed.]
