YET ANOTHER INDUSTRY.

TO THE i EDITOR Sir, —The Waitara correspondent of the Yeoman, after describing the successful improvements to the Waitara river and the extraordinary rapid increase of trade at that port, states that “ yet another industry is likely to be started ere long, and the co-operatiou of the settlers is now all that is wanted to secure a frozen meat export trade from Waitara. Auckland merchants offer to supply the capital for the erection o£ works i£ the settlers will guarantee to keep them: supplied with beef and mutton; and the project is to freeze or chili the meat at the port, ship - it to Onehunga, and convey it thence by rail to the vessel in Auckland harbour.” If this can be done bj r co-operation between Auckland and Waitara, is it not worthy the attention of settlers between Hawera and Waitotara? Can not the Wellington merchants see: their wayto co-operate with the settlers here, they supplying the capital for the erection of works at the port of Patea, and the settlers guaranteeing the supply of stock ? There Is one gentleman, on this coast who has taken a deal of interest in the frozen meat industry, who has sound practical views of the necessity of placing the meat on the : Home market in the primest condition (which can only be done__ by killing in the district in stock are grazed.) This gentlemans! believe a shareholder in the Welling n freezing Company, and if he would come forward, call a meeting, of stockowners at Patea, invite the Chairman of the Wellington Company to attend and place the matter fully before the settlers which has never been done here yet; I have no dbubt it would open the question fully. I think there is no doubt that for graziers to receive full value for their stock it must be killed here, the expenses of taking live stock to Wellington, the loss ’of all the bye products of the slaughter yard including pigs, and the depreciation of the:quality are all against the settler. I£ the Wellington company will see that it is their place to provide the capital for buildings here and to see that the meat is properly cooled and proper cool storage provided on the steamers to keep it until arrival in Wellington; then to be placed in the company’s freezing store to be froze and shipped on farmer’s or shipper’s account—then and not till then will the meat trade be satisfactory. A farmer can then send his meat 1 Home with the same facility as be now does his tallow or wood, and a meeting of graziers and Wellington men is wanted for an interchange of views, and give life and vitality to the stock trade of this coast, and trade in general with Wellington. Wellington is one of the grandest ports in the world and naturally one of the cheapest to work, but its merchants, with the exception of its leading ironmonger, are an apathetic lot and are personally unknown to the settlers in these districts and ignorant: of the capabilities ,of /pro? duction and - capacity for- trade ! of theCoast. It would do them good to leave home .for a week and rub noses with the producers - and discuss r matters to their mutual benefit.—l am, &c., ri’L: riri-s X Progress.
