DEATH OF A VETERAN OFFICER
■ +- ■■■■■ [per press association.] AUCKLAND, This day, 10-55 a.m. Major Withers, officer in charge of the Volunteers, died on Saturday, aged 76, of bronchitis. Deceased am red at the Bay of Islands in 1817 with his regiment, the 65th, being then Colour - Sergeant and PaySergeant. Soon afterwards he was ordered to Auckland and promoted to the rank ef Sergeant-Major, and then received commission as Quarter-Master. He was subsequently; promoted to tire rank of Captain, and served as Quarter-Master during the Waikato campaign in the Transport Corps Service. Eventually he retired on the rank of Captain, receiving a Captain’s, pensions and then went to reside: at Napier. When the West Coast disturbance broke, out. Majoi Withers formed a Volunteer. Company in Napier to take part in the work: of quelling the rebellion, and he was a prominent figure throughout that 1 campaign. Government rewarded his services by appointing him officer commanding the Hawkes Bay district, and, subsequently, when Major Gordon retired, he was appointed inspecting officer for the Colony, and in 1876 was appointed to the charge of the Auckland district. He leaves a grown up family.
