ROBBING A CATHEDRAL.
A curious robbery was perpetrated in Auckland last week. The police received information from a pawn broker named Bloom, that he suspected a man named O’Shea of stealing a coat which he had attempted to pledge at Bloom’s shop. Constable McLennan was detailed to run the thief to earth. He ascertained that O’Shea had been drinking about in hotels in Queen-street, and the worthy constable, after examining sundry bars, found his man in the United Service. The “ man in blue ” noticed that O’Shea was concealing something in his shirt, and made the man disgorge a silver Chalice and paten, articles used in the service of the Roman Catholic ‘Church. With the assistance of Constable Collis, the prisoner was conveyed to the Police Station, and charges of_ the larcenies of the coat and the silver articles laid against him. Enquiries were then made at St Patrick’s Cathedral, and it was ascertained that the Chalice and paten were the property of the Church, They were deposited in the tabernacle in the vesby. The chalice is valued at £6 10s, and the paten at 30s. In the same vestry, but locked up in a closet, was deposited a golden chalice valued at from £3O to £lO.
