MR BRYCE AND THE VOLUNTEERS.
(per press association) The Hon. J. Bryce, as Defencepresided at the presenting of prizes won at the meeting of the Wcllington Rifle Association. In thanking Miss Pearce, who presented the prizes, Mr Bryce said- that whatever (created sympathy with the Volunteers deserved to be encouraged, as it is to them the Colony has to look for its defence in case'of emergency. If properly drilled they conld prevent any foe from landing. „ As , an...instanceof the value of Volunteers incase of emergency, be referred to his recent experience in the Waikato, where in six hours after he was able, in the night time, to communicate with the commanding officer, the men .of a corps scattered over 50 miles of country were all ready for service. He eulogised their energy; and promptitude which . had prevented a serious calamity to the country, as but for it the natives would have attacked the town and taken the Europeans prisoners. He also praised Captain Hamlin for having his corps all ready within five hours. He had . grea.t pleasure in presiding on such an occasion as'the present.
