LOSS OF THE HUIA'S CHIEF OFFICER.

PS';: V I (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

WELLINGTON, This day. The Huia arrived from Wanganui at 1 o’clock this afternoon. Her chief officer, Captain Alex Murphy, was lost overboard during the passage. It appears that he was in charge of the deck after leaving Wanganui, and when about 20 miles from that port he was seen to fall overboard, and it is supposed that the suction drew ,him uaderneath the vessel and he was struck by the propeller as he : was not seen afterwardi. The mystery is - what caused him to fall overboard, but it is surmised that while standing beside the rail he .fell asleep and went over the side. Murphy leaves a wife and four children resident in Wellington. An enquiry will be held. The flags in town were lowered half-mast in respect of his memory. ■ ■ ■ ’ ; 7 ] •;
