WAVERLEY.

[From our Correspondent.] KiV'l Monday. The competition for the challenge belt of the .Wairoa Light Horse took place on Saturday last. The weather was, however, decidedly against making good scoring. One more competition will decide who is to hold the belt. Mr F. Matheson is at present leading by a few points. The final competition takes place on Saturday 19th inst. . " -•, >■ .■; ■. 1 The committee appointed to conduct the Quadrille Assembles met on Saturday evening to arrange the programme for the coming-season. It is intended to hold 'monthly dances in the Town Hall, and I jam informed the arrangements being madeare of the best. ‘ It is satisfactory to see some interest being taken in the elections for local bodies hi the district. A poll takes place on Wednesday, in the Old Town Hall, for ;one member for the Waverley Town Board, 'Messrs M McLean arid Catanach being the, aspirants for municipal honour. I, am riot, however, aware as to the views held by the candidates. No doubt the electors ■ will-return the best man. Mr F R Jackson’s sale on Friday was a successful one on the whole, most of the entries being satisfactorily disposed of. I am informed that the late Mr Scott had taken the precaution to insure his life for £SOO in the Mutual Life Association of Australia a few years ago. As I believe he leaves an only son, this sum will be a very acceptable legacy. . Enquiries are being made for sections in the Moinahaki Block. Now that the back country is so rapidly being opened up by roads, bridges, &c., people have a better chance of judging the quality of the 1 and, which is generally acknowledged to be excellent. The fugged nature of some parts of the Block, however, have hitherto given it a bad name to a certain extent.
