SUPREME COURT.

(PER press association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, May 3. The Supreme Court was opened today by Mr Justice Gillies. In his charge to the Grand Jury, His Honor said the oases were somewhat numerous, bnt not more than was to be expected in a growing population. Most of the cases came from out-districts, on the outpost of civilisation, where wild and lawless characters congregated. At the same lime the cases are not of a heinous character, none of a high class being in the calendar. There are ten charges against eight, persons, three of whom are Maoris. The most serious case is one of arson. There was a prisoner on bail committed on a charge of forgery in a Bank pass-book. As the Judge was given to understand that there was a doubt as to his surrendering to his bail, he would order him to be called before the bill was sent to the Grand Jury, so that it might not be necessary to deal with the case, Hori Ngaero, alias Te Koti, charged witth stealing a horse from Cornwall; at Stratford, was found not guilty, and was discharged. Tawhero, for house- w breaking, pleaded guilty, aind was sentenced to two years’ hard labour. John O’Donovan, for horsestealing and larceny at Hawera received three years’. True bills were found in the following cases ; —J. Black (late County Secretary, Patea), for embezzlement; ; M. S. Daniells (New Plymouth), arson; ’and W. Dale, jnn. (Paten), forgery.
