POACHING.

The Secretary of the Acclimatisation Society, writes to the Star that under the provisions of the Protection of Animals Act the penalties for poaching are very heavy. A person can be fined £2O for either of the following offences: Taking or killing any game in any dis-' trict except between the Ist May and the 31st July inclusive; for having in his possession any game except during such last-mentioned period ; for trespassing in pursuit of game or native game; for taking or killing any game without a license; for refusing to produce his license to any authorised person demanding the same when in pursuit of game or native game. (Authorised person being and including all justices of the peace, constables, rangers appointed tinder the Act, proprietors or occupiers of land on which any person may be found in pursuit of game, and last, but not least, all holders of licenses issued under this Act.)
