KAKARAMEA.

[From our Correspondent.] Monday. Mr F. B. Jackson held his usual sale of stock at the yards on Friday last. There were 100 head of cattle yarded, and 1700 sheep penned. Cows, fat, brought from £3 to £8 7s 6d.- Cows and ,calves, £3 7s 6d ; steers, £3 7s 6d to £4 17s 6d; heifers, £2 7s 6d. Sheed : —Ewes, 8s 6d ; lambs, 4s to 6s 6d. Although the weather was fine, and a good number present, the bidding was not all lively. Fearly everything, however, sold afterthe.auction. Our Railway Station now presents a very neat appearance. At the entrances five serviceable gates have been hung, the platform metalled, and a new carriage road of commodious width is in course of formation. The new cattle yards will be commenced by Messrs Jay and Haynes ih aweek or so. On Saturday last I rode over , the line for the first time, from Kakaramea to Manutahi and back, and was rather astonished to find how smoothly, considering the newness of the line we travelled. The solid bottom accounts partly for this. Platelaying on some of the sidings is not quite completed yet, owing to the nonarrival of railway iron. This is rather unfortunate for the contractor. It is to be hoped that the rails will arrive shortly so that the whole work may be finished as speedily as possible. If the works on the other side of the river are proceeding at the same rate as on this section the line should be opened for through traffic by the end of next month. The eclipse of the moon on Sunday night, owing to a cloudy sky, was not observable. f
