AGRICULTUR A L STATISTICS.
to'Tiln KUiron. Sir,—l noticed n the 3fail of tin* IG* h inst., tho returns given for Hawcra, \Van ganui, and Paten Counties. For lb" oilier two 1 cannot say, but for Patea there is evidently a mistake, calculated to mislead the public. In the returns for wheat the average per acre is 33 bushels, while in that for oats, which is always so much higher, it is put at 24 bushels per acre. It seems to me that the figures have been reversed, which would be a great deal nearer the mark. Even then 24 bushels of wheat would be rather high, as so much is in such a damaged condition as to be unfit for milling, and farmers will have some difficulty in disposing of it at any price. I write these few remarks to show that statistics are not always to be relied on, especially in grain, r and that when.,an average for a district is taken,' it should borne in mind, that wheat unfit for milling, is no longer wheat, and therefore should he not be counted in the averages.—l am, &c.
